Guelph Community Christian School (GCCS) began in 1961 with 52 students and 2 teachers, operating under the name John Calvin Christian School. Classes were initially held at First Christian Reform Church on Water Street. In 1964 the first phase of the school building was completed on its current site at 286 Water Street. Today, GCCS has 158 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. While the school has roots in the Reform tradition, it has always been an independent, interdenominational community with families from over 30 different churches participating. In 2008, the school's members approved a decision to change the name from John Calvin to Guelph Community Christian School, to better reflect the non-denominational character of our school, while continuing to emphasize its identity as a Christian community. Guelph Community Christian School is operated by The John Calvin Christian School Society Inc., an independent, federally-registered charitable organization whose membership is primarily made up of parents.
